What is Happiness?

What is Happiness?

She woke up in the morning and went back to sleep. "Why should I wake up early?  I quit my job and I have the whole day free. So I can do what I want. I can leave whenever I want," she said.  She does not have to get up at 8.30 in the morning to go to work. All she has to do is clean the house, go shopping and prepare dinner for her family. She can easily do all this in two hours a day. No one asks her why she didn't clean the house or why she didn't cook a better meal today.  After twenty years of a busy working life, not getting up early in the morning was a bit of fun and relaxing for her.

When she did wake up in the morning, she spent her two hours on Instagram. Then she would take a hot shower and watch movies on YouTube and Netflix. Deniz stuck to this routine for a month.

A month later? She started to get bored. When she woke up in the morning, no one was at home. Her children had gone to school and her husband had gone to work. She no longer enjoyed sleeping for hours on end.   Would spending more time on Instagram make her happy? Maybe she was unhappy because she didn't have many friends. Or was it her furniture that was bothering her? No, she loved her furniture. Over time, her life began to seem meaningless.

People think the only way we can rest is by lying on a couch or bed.

Sometimes we spend hours on social media to rest after work. But do we really feel rested after spending hours on social media? This was the source of Deniz's confusion and unhappiness.

Deniz went out onto the balcony of her house and looked at the setting sun. She thought for a long time, trying to understand why. The sun never stands still. It is always moving. It rises in the morning, peaks at noon and sets in the evening.

Then she looked at the birds. They were always moving too. Just looking at them made her feel peaceful. And she said, "No more laziness. How was she going to do that? The day was almost over. No problem, what could she do until the children came home in the evening? She would spend an hour preparing dinner. Then she would spend half an hour reading a book that would make her feel better, instead of wasting time on Instagram. Or chatting in a WhatsApp group.

When people recognise their responsibilities and fulfil them without procrastination, they begin to be happy in this life. Because only a person who is in motion is a happy person. A housewife, a student, an accountant, a 70-year-old retired uncle and even a 6-year-old child are only happy when they are in motion. Because everyone can only be happy and peaceful when they are working towards their goals. People sleep best at night when they are really tired during the day. And that makes it easier to get up early in the morning. But we make everything harder by wasting our energy by choosing the wrong path. So where are you stuck in your life? Where are you looking for happiness?
