Freedom, Mind And Conscience, Human Rights, Where Are You?

Reem would have turned five this year. She loves celebrating her birthday with a party every year. Birthday cake, balloons, gifts, blowing out the candles... Every detail was a source of joy for her. Since birth, she had lived with her grandfather, and he knew her very well. She was the apple of his grandfather's eye.

Reem's birthday was coming up, and she asked her grandpa for a new bike this year. Grandpa had already bought the bike. He wanted to surprise her. The day before, everything about the birthday was almost ready: the cake, the candles, the balloons... Grandpa was eagerly anticipating the moment when he would see the smile on her face. While he was thinking of those plans, it started to rain outside. The sweet sound of the rain filled his heart with peace as he fell asleep.

He woke up in the middle of the night with a loud noise. He was shocked. He could barely breathe in the huge cloud of dust. What was happening? The darkness and the pain in the back of his neck... He could hardly sit up. He was confused for all these a nightmare or reality. The walls and half of the roof were collapsed. He could walk on the rubble by force. He called out desperately, “Reem! Tariq! Aisha!” There was no sound except a bitter silence. Screaming sounds were coming from outside. “Run! They are bombing the city!”

My God! They were in the wreckage of a crime built by human hands, not a nightmare. In the evening, the neighborhoods soaked by the peaceful rain turned into a rain of flames. “Reem! Tariq! Aisha!” he called out in pain. Silence! His heart filled with fear. What if something happened to them?! Their house turned into a rubble. He didn’t know what to do. All his loved ones were under these rubbles. It was not a bombed house, but the lives that would soon wake up to a birthday celebration. He called out as if his chest was tearing, “Reem! Tariq! Aisha! Where are you?”

They had a life that flowed, though not as calmly as in another part of the world. They worked during the day and returned home in the evening. They went to school and studied their lessons. They read books, and they were a bibliophile. They had dinner together and talked about daily events. Sometimes, they laughed and shared their problems. They offered their neighbors a bowl of their food. They joined a loved one’s wedding ceremony. They fed and loved their pets. Especially cats… They went through very difficult times, but this was like none of them. Everything about life was never this abnormal. Drinking clean water and eating hot food was never this luxurious. Being able to send a message saying "I'm alive," being able to sleep, and being able to take a bath…

However, Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says;

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are equipped with reason and conscience and should treat each other with an understanding of brotherhood."

So, it means that some believed that they were born more equal. Somehow, they have convinced themselves that the slaughter of a civil is obligatory, the attack is called self-defense, and the farewell of children is a casualty.

A birthday girl who couldn't ride her new bike, a premature baby who barely breathed on his own, or a grandfather who was playing with his grandchild became all serious threats to them.

The first article of the declaration was the right of every human being to have dignity and freedom, to shelter and eat with all their loved ones, and to live in peace and tranquility. A massive air attack destroyed all those words.

Now, amid this rubble, all these bombs, warplanes, tanks, and rifles, a voice is rising towards that cloud of dust like a grandfather looking for his grandchildren...

Freedom! Mind and conscience! Human rights! Where are you?
