Love, Health and Peace in the New Year

Love, Health and Peace in the New Year

It was New Year  time in France. The streets were decorated with glamorous lights. Hasan had worked on a holiday to get an extra advance and left work late that day. He was walking home tired.  The streets were full of people, people were shouting and singing songs. Everyone had made preparations for a spectacular fireworks display. At home, people went to the windows to watch the show in the sky. Now, the moment had come. 3..2..1..  Happy New Year....  People were throwing fireworks everywhere and hugging each other. The sky was filled with colourful fireworks.

This was the moment when Hasan got nervous. He started to walk fast through the crowds.

He became worried and scared. He wished he could have gone home earlier at work. Hasan started to run. He was running home, bumping into people. While people were singing New Year songs and having fun, Hasan was somewhere else...So where was Hasan?

Hasan was in Gaza. Hasan was seven years old when he was running there... The apartment where they lived in Gaza came to his mind. They were eating künefe and drinking tea with his father, mother and sisters.  Hasan's father was making the whole family laugh by telling funny stories.  Although Hasan did not fully understand what his father was telling, he was laughing like everyone else.  A sound came from far away, but the laughter in the house drowned out the sound coming from outside. That sound came from far away... Then that sound started to increase gradually.  Hasan looked at his mother's face, his mother's happy face was suddenly covered with fear. The voices were getting closer. As if someone was turning up the radio. His sisters started shouting. His father was trying to calm them down. His mother embraced Hasan. Hasan was in a daze. And that last sound was the loudest. Hassan opened his eyes and saw his mother. He saw his mother calm and unconcerned. His mother seemed to be sleeping, but he didn't like that very much. He saw his mother sleeping a lot. What had happened this time? Hassan was 7 years old when he met death for the first time.

He screamed mummy, mummy wake up, mummy wake up.

He was the only member of Hasan's family alive. His mother, sisters and father were martyred.

His uncle in France took him to live with him. Hasan lived with his uncle's family in France. Years passed, Hasan was 17 years old, he started university in Paris. Years passed, he was working and completing his master's degree.

Hasan was now 27 years old.

Every new year there was a fireworks display, so Hassan turned 7 years old.

In Palestine, children don't grow up.

Because every year children were killed in Palestine.

Fireworks killed birds at the beginning of the year, bombs killed Palestinians in Gaza.

At the beginning of each year, TV presenters wished for love, peace and health for the whole world.

But peace had not come to Palestine for decades.
